Il s'est fait connaître avec l'album mythique Tubular bells, premier disque publié par le label Virgin Records. Cet opus contient entre autres le thème principal du film L'Exorciste. Mike Oldfield s'est illustré dans plusieurs style musicaux, du rock planant au pop rock avec Moonlight shadows, tube extrait de l'album Crises. Le musicien revient donc avec son premier disque depuis 2008 et Music of the spheres. Le second disque contient les versions instrumentales.
